SugarCRM Slimming Down?
You might have noticed a slightly different attitude from Sugar towards feature expansions. There are definite signs that Sugar has committed to 'less = more', at least for now. A list of things to be towed:
- (Advanced) Projects Slated to be removed from 5.5.1 onwards and to be released to SugarForge. The good: Advanced Projects for CE!
- RSS Slated to be removed from 5.5.1 onwards and to be released to SugarForge
- My Portal Slated to be removed from 5.5.1 onwards and to be released to SugarForge
- Email POP3 support will die, along with a lot of other things
- Bugs? While there has been no official word, the Bug Tracker has been disabled by default in 5.5 RC3, just like the modules above. Perhaps a sign?
Now, the key question: Who will step up to maintain these modules?
Update January 2010: SugarCRM changed their plans a bit. The modules will not be removed from 5.5.1 but from 5.5.2. Also, POP3 and sendmail support will remain, at least in 5.5.1, but disabled by default on new installs. SugarDev Developer Tools will be able to enable POP3 and sendmail functionality as long as the code is still there.
Update April 2010: The removal of the Project module was cancelled.
