The Right Setup
SugarCRM is a great product. But watch out: a great computer application never runs on its own! Therefore, we've selected the tools we feel you need to run SugarCRM the right way.
Server Side
LAMP Stack
Run SugarCRM like it's meant: With Linux, Apache 2, MySQL 5 & PHP 5. Or at least, the last three. Also, if your business is getting more and more serious you should think of the possibility of outsourcing your Sugar server administration to a specialist.
Client Side
Mozilla Firefox

Use this cutting edge browser to run SugarCRM even more securely and comfortable.
Thunderbird w/Asertiva Thunderbird Plugin

Thunderbird (a project from the same people who created Firefox) can handle all your daily email needs. And the Asertiva Thunderbird Extension for Sugar can help you using it with Sugar. This free extension enables you to relate emails to contacts, leads, accounts, etc. from the comfort of your own desktop!
OR
Build-In Email Client
The build-in email client (since Sugar 5) is quite able too.
If you were expecting a developer setup, don't worry! It follows now..
Developer Setup
IDE/Editor
I have no illusion of settling this ever ongoing dispute. Myself, I'm on EasyEclipse LAMP.
Version Control
Please make use of version control, favorably Subversion.
